Our two-year old loves all things Elmo but this DVD stands out among all of the others.

It contains three episodes of “Elmo’s World”. Each episode follows a similar flow of events while covering different topics: dancing, books and music. Each episode contains

* funny skits (Our son always laughs at the misadventures of Mr. Noodle. In case you have a preference, all three episodes on this DVD have the “original” Mr. Noodle played by Bill Irwin rather than the newer one played by the late Michael Jeter)

* songs and counting exercises that encourage active participation (he mimics the hokey pokey and points to the counting objects as they appear on the screen)

* instructional live-action video clips. For example, the “Reading” episode has a clip on the basics of how the library works and encourages kids to have their parents take them there. This will obviously be lost on younger toddlers, but shows how the content will be interesting to a wide variety of ages.

The episode format is great for younger toddlers because they can key in on what type of skit or song is upcoming after only a few viewings. Other Elmo DVDs (i.e. “The Best of Elmo”) don’t follow this pattern, and so he’s not as interested in them at this young age; those DVDs function more as sing-alongs for older toddlers.

I disagree with some of the other negative reviews based on the disc’s inability to hold a toddler’s complete attention for the whole hour. First off, I doubt that there’s anything in the world that could hold a two-year old’s complete attention for more than ten minutes. Second, I believe that programs like this one are most beneficial when your child enjoys its content interactively along with others. We love watching this DVD along with him and he loves showing off how he can dance along with it and point out and name specific objects.

Another criticism that I’ve seen stems from the commercials that are at the very beginning of the main program. You can skip past these trailers for other Sesame Street DVDs just by advancing to the next chapter. One button - not hard at all.

In summary, this DVD has great educational content for kids within a wide range of ages and it’s very entertaining as well.

My daughter, 17 months, has been a Sesame Street fan for about 3 months now. No matter what she’s doing, she stops cold as soon as the Elmo’s World theme music starts! Now, if we’re ever out and unable to catch the day’s episode of Sesame Street, she never has to go without Elmo’s World! What’s great about this video (and the 3 other volumes that have since come out!) is that it contains 3 complete episodes of Elmo’s World! You can either really treat your child, and let them watch all 3 (heaven on earth, in their minds), or “ration” them out, one at a time, if you just need 15 minutes to get dinner on, relax (what’s that?), or whatever. If your little one needs that Elmo “fix”, get this video, and all the other Elmo’s World videos! They’re well worth the money!

A frigid woman who likes funerals and is turned on only by dead bodies enters into a sexless marriage with CAROL BURNETT SHOW bud Lyle Waggoner and secretly joins a cult of necrophiliacs in a local morgue. For a film that had so much perverse and ghoulish potential, this film only partially entertains. There’s a particularly shocking scene early in the film of a guy being embalmed alive but the film gets bogged down in the drama of marital problems in the second hour. While the serious approach to such outrageous material is greatly appreciated, a little more ghoulish horror would’ve been nice.

For years, I had hoped that some great DVD company like Anchor Bay or Blue Underground would find it in their hearts to re-distribute this film. I did get my wish & Code Red has done a marvelous job. Although the DVD quality wasn’t as good as I had hoped for, quality is small potatoes as far I’m concerned which can be easily forgiven or perhaps even overlooked when we consider how long this film has been out of circulation. Also, the film is released here in it’s original uncut format which is worth the nominal investment you will make.

When I think of great horror films in the late ’60’s or early ’70’s, LMD always comes to mind. Infact, I’m baffled as to why this one hasn’t a stronger following or why more people didn’t latch on to this one but perhaps the DVD release will grant curiousity seekers yet another chance to view this fantastic film. Fingers crossed.

Yes, that is Lyle Waggoner & you may very well remember him from The Carol Burnette Show or Wonder Woman. I can’t say that I recall ever seeing anything else after this with Lyle but I think he did a terrific job here. Mary Charlotte Wilcox also gives a rather complex performance here as a necrophiliac who could never quite get over the loss of her beloved father.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Love Me Deadly! Click Here

What makes LMD so disturbing or even a tad bit moody is the almost creepy atmosphere which, at times, is downplayed or brushed to the side with the romantic interludes. The viewer wouldn’t want to to become too comfortable in those sweet or joyful moments, however, as the film can still conjure up some horrific images such as a live young man being embablmed. Save a few rather ghoulish or gruesome montages, LMD could’ve easily been construed as a slightly off-kilter love story with a Hitchcockian twist.

LMD revolves around the life of a confused beautiful young woman (played by Wilcox) who seems to have an infinity with the recently deceased young men in her area. She often find herself attending their funerals even though she’s has never known them nor any of their families or friends. In fact, we find her scoping the obituaries in the early portion of the film for young men in their thirties. But wait, the morbidity continues when she finds that the owners of a local funeral home are also necrophiliacs & some of them may even be involved in murder.

The second half of the film deals with the romance between Wilcox & Waggoner. Obviously, she loves the man enough to marry him but finds it extremely difficult to consummate with her spouse. We eventually find out why she loves him & how her father passed away but unfortunately our lead is well past the point of no return. Sadly, this unnatural obsession with the recent deceased could prove to become fatal for all involved.

Great film. Most likely, viewers who are expecting extreme gore or high adult content will be disappointed. Fans of psychological thrillers with a perverse edge may find this more fascinating however. Love can be the most deadly force in the universe & not all forms of love are understandable nor accepted. Having said that, LMD is one of the best film I’ve purchased on DVD in some time.

Shakespeare in Treasure is a film for anyone who loves art and literaturewith a passion. Aside from being a elegant savor record, the filmBuy,Download, Or Stream Shakespeare in Love! Click Hereitself is a “adore letter” to the arts. I can only describeit as a “golden” film, because that’s what I assume of when Ipicture scenes from the movie…pure gold. I esteem Shakespeare, andthe gleaming screenplay manages to earn a flesh and blood person outBuy,Download, Or Stream Shakespeare in Love! Click Hereof such an enigmatic historical figure - it may not be loyal, but it’s
a lot of fun nonetheless. The acting is noble - Gwyneth Paltrow is
glorious, Judi Dench is unbelievable, Geoffrey Hurry is hilarious, and
Joseph Fiennes is the hottest thing to near along since his older
brother! I appreciate the ending especially - Twelfth Night is my favorite
Shakespearean play, and the last line unprejudiced speaks volumes: “For
she will be my heroine for all time, and her name will be Viola.”
Perhaps the best thing about the film is the contrivance it blends comedy and
tragedy together in such a bittersweet design.Buy,Download, Or Stream Shakespeare in Love! Click Here One final note: I too
was surprised that this film won Best Recount, because I also loved
Saving Private Ryan. Both films were cinematic masterpieces of very
different kinds, and both were equally satisfactory. I’m pleased the Academy
shook things up a itsy-bitsy.bfounded while the final credits rolled. Marc
Norman and Tom Stoppard must have loved their subject matter,
researched the period with zeal as well as having the ability to
create a provocative romantic drama.

The whole thing was created
out of the barest glimmer of fact concerning Shakespeare’s life. It
focuses on the gap between his marriage in London as a young man and
his eventual return to London as a successful playwright. The theory
states that “suffering is the mother of creativity”, so
Young William must have had a vast deal of hardship indeed. Hence,
the opportunity for a extraordinary movie to be made.

A handsome
young Shakespeare is introduced to us during a dim period of
writer’s block. He is portrayed as any other writer we could imagine;
poor, horny, suffering from professional jealousy and not particularly
respectable. He’s over-committed to two theatres and selling vaporware
for all he’s worth. Poorly named vaporware at that, “Romeo and
Ethyl the Pirate’s Daughter”.

But fate has more in store
for this hopeful scribbler than even he would dream. Enter stage left,
the savor of his life, in the guise of an actor, shyly auditioning for
a section in his recent play. (Shades of Blackadder here) . He is immediately
taken by this youthfull stage strutter because of a seeming preference
for Bill’s work over that of the leading playwright of the day,
Christopher Marlowe.

This interest takes him to the actor’s
home, where Tomas Kent transforms himself into Viola De Lesseps the
refined daughter of a wealthy merchant. This magic act is only
possible because of the artful protection offered by Viola’s nurse and
part time confidant, played by Imelda Staunton. And as with Clarke
Kent, no one can penetrate the cunning disguise of Mr Thomas Kent,
except for a profitable ferryman. And it is this very ferryman that puts
William on the proper path in his pursuit of the lady Viola.

And so we gain the privilege of watching William Shakespeare give
birth to the Distinguished Romeo and Juliet as a counterpoint to his torrid
and hazardous affair with a woman betrothed to Lord Wessex; one of the
most influential and worthy men in the city. The ups and downs, ins
and outs of this relationship, and its eventual destroy, are all
delightful to ogle as well as being grist for the mill of
Shakespeare’s future plays.

For anyone that has even a passing
familiarity with the Bard’s work or impartial likes a grand romance, take
the time to indulge in this special movie. In fact, purchase a few times
because it gets better with every viewing.

I honestly did not know what to inquire when I first sat down to gaze “Shakespeare In Worship.” Perhaps that was for the best, since this film teems with unexpected moments and twists, turning literary history upside down and giving it a clever and bawdy twist. Gywenth Paltrow plays a young noblewoman who is expected to be demurely betrothed, but who wants none of the life ahead of her. She yearns for the theater, and, in her headstrong, ambitious drive, dresses like a boy to procure a fragment in Will Shakespeare’s newest drama. Of course, the two tumble in cherish (hence the title!) and their duplicity leads to site complications that fetch more and more wicked. Literary jokes abound, but you don’t need to know a whit about Shakespeare to like this romp. This is a romantic comedy cloaked in Elizabethian times, an anachronism that is thoroughly satisfying.Paltrow’s Viola is gutsy, intellectual, and torn, a portrayal that deservedly earned her an Oscar. Joseph Fiennes makes a lovable, bumbling Will Shakespeare. The two prove a chemistry that brings the witty script to life and elevates this film to a level above most romantic comedies.

This film should appeal to a wide range of viewers - even those who hated studying Shakespeare in school.

This direct-to-video sequel is already out in Europe, so that’s why I’ve already seen it. And guess what : I love it! Not only because I’m a Balto fan, but because it’s a really good animated movie, especially for a DTV (and we all know that the DTV sequels are usually all but good!).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Balto III - Wings of Change! Click Here

In fact, it gives a slightly different feeling compared to the original or Wolf Quest. I don’t know exactly why, but this is the first time I felt that with an animated sequel…And it’s really a nice thing ;) The story is one of the best points : there are a lot of things happening, perhaps even more than in the first, and everything goes quickly. There are no boring passages, although some will probably not please everyone. No magic here, the humans are back for good, all the key points of the scenario give a feeling of reality; so it is much closer to the original on that side. The characters aren’t still very well drawn; in fact, it depends, sometimes they are perfectly drawn, nearly as in the first one, and sometimes much less. I would say it is common for a DTV on that side. However, the backgrounds are AWESOME. The colors are more than beautiful, and the less beautiful backgrounds are on pair with the most beautiful in the original. It’s another thing that is really impressive for a DTV sequel, seeing that IMO they are as beautiful as some big animated movies like “Brother Bear” or “Spirit”, and perhaps even more! As for the musics : I would say the same thing. While there are still some empty passages, the soundtrack is really, really awesome, impressive, especially near the end. It may not have the shrewd style of Horner’s Balto 1 soundtrack, yet the score from Adam Berry is exceptional, and make some passages unforgettable. To give a better idea of what I overall think of the film, I would summarize that into one word : beautiful. Really, really beautiful. Beautiful scenario, beautiful musics, beautiful graphics… Some of you might be wondering if they will rent it or buy it directly. Well, I believe that this film has more than enough replay value, when Wolf Quest had nearly none; so IMO, it is definitely a must-buy for every Balto fan, and even for everyone else ;)
To summarize : A wonderful film. Definitely a must-see for Balto fans, and one of the best DTV sequels ever made to an animated movie (maybe the best with TLK 1/2). It may have some flaws, but there are so many qualities in the scenario, graphics, musics…that everyone will let through these minor problems, and enjoy the great story it offers. If you liked Wolf Quest, you have all chances to love it. If you didn’t, but still liked the original Balto, believe me : it’s somewhat different from WQ, so you don’t have any reason to not watch it just because WQ was a disappointment. Unlike Wolf Quest, I really can’t see anyone who wouldn’t like it.

My 3 year old LOVES all the Balto movies. This one seems to be his favorite. He has watched it so many times that he practically knows all the dialog by heart. And it peaks his imagination to play Balto, culminating in trying to be a sled dog pulling his wagon in the back yard. Hope there’s a Balto IV coming soon.

It’s rare that an artist can be both popular and one of the best at what he or she does. Alfred Hitchcock embodied both these elements. His films used suspenseful thrillers as a vehicle to try out inventive and often groundbreaking editing and camera techniques. While this collection from Warner Brothers doesn’t include all his best films, there are enough here to justify picking up this generous and beautifully remastered collection of some of Hitch’s best films.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection! Click Here

“Suspicion” is the oldest of the nine films included in this boxed set. Cary Grant plays Johnny Aysgarth a womanizing gambler who flirts with the bookish Lina McLaidlaw (Joan Fontaine in her Oscar winning role). After he woos and marries her, Lina begins to suspect that Johnny may be trying to kill her for her money. Although RKO forced Hitchcock to change the ending from the one he wanted (I’ll let you watch the short documentary on the film that’s included to find out what occurred) and the film was seriously compromised by studio interference, it’s still a worthwhile thriller that has Grant playing a cad at a point in his career when he was put into romantic leads. I’d be suspicious of anyone who said he loved me and still called me “monkey face”.

“Foreign Correspondent” was made by Hitchcock while he was on loan from David O. Selznick’s studio. Hitchcock relished the opportunity to work elsewhere as Selznick interfered too much with the making of the films he produced. Shot just as World War II was erupting in Europe dragging in other countries into the fray, the film stars Joel McCrea as reporter Johnny Jones (what’s with all these Johnny’s in Hitch’s films?) discovers a conspiracy of fascists threatening to take over Europe. McCrea gives a energetic performance and, although he wasn’t Hitch’s first choice (Henry Fonda was his first choice but the production couldn’t afford him), he more than lives up to the potential of the role.

“Mr. and Mrs. Smith” features Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery in a screw-ball (!) comedy directed by the master of suspense. Hitch directed the film as a favor to Carole Lombard a very good friend at the time. While the script has some clever moments and Hitch’s direction has a number of nice set pieces, it’s one of Hitchcock’s lesser works. It’s still worth viewing.

“Strangers on a Train” is a flawed masterpiece from Hitch. Guy (Farley Granger) frustrated because his unfaithful wife won’t give him a divorce so he can remarry, chats with Bruno (the marvelous Robert Walker in one of his best roles) a passenger he meets on the train back to Washington D.C. After a drink Guy spills the beans about his wife and Bruno offers to swap murders. In essence, their crime will be perfect because their complete strangers and have no other connection other than the meeting on the train. Guy believes Bruno is joking and plays along. When Guy’s wife is brutally murdered (in a stunning sequence where we see the murder reflected in the woman’s glasses), Bruno expects Guy to reciprocate. Otherwise, he threatens to pin the murder on Guy. The stunning conclusion on the merry-go-round ranks as one of Hitch’s best. This edition includes both the final theatrical version and “preview” versions of the film which differ slightly.

“Dial M for Murder” caught Hitchcock recharging his batteries. Whenever he felt the need to creatively regenerate, he’d pick a subject that would interest him technically but that was already put together. It’s ironic, though, that he should pick another main character who is a tennis player. “Dial M” plays as a inverted version of “Strangers”. Based on Frederick Knott’s Broadway hit play, “Dial M for Murder” was originally shot in 3-D (and it’s a wonderful film to see in that format if for no other reason than to see what a great film director can do with the format with subtly and style) but only exhibited in that format in certain venues. Ray Milland (subbing for Cary Grant who had an argument with Hitchcock and withdrew from the film) plays a slick tennis player who devises the perfect murder. He blackmails an old college chum (the impressive Anthony Dawson) to fake a break in and murder his wealthy wife (Grace Kelly). It seems that Milland has discovered that she had an affair with an American mystery writer (Bob Cummings). The inspector (the droll John Williams) in the case recognizes that appearances can be deceiving when he investigates a murder.

Hitch believed “Stage Fright” to be one of his miscalculations because of a technical narrative trick he used to clue in viewers on the story. Richard Todd plays an actor being pursued for the murder of a lover’s (Marlene Dietrich) husband. Eve Gill (Jane Wyman) believes her male friend is innocent and goes undercover to try and catch the real killer. It’s a marvelous and underrated Hitchcock minor classic with a brilliant opening sequence and conclusion. The actors all give exceptional performances particularly Todd and Wyman. Playing with the artifice of the theater world, Hitch also plays with audience expectations.

“I Confess” had a troubled history during its production. Breen’s censorship office (which used to censor films even at the scripting stage) objected to Hitch’s story of a Priest (Montgomery Clift) who hears a murder confession and is torn about reporting it to the police. His vow prevents him from doing so but it also implicates him in the murder. Also featuring Anne Baxter and Karl Malden, “I Confess” isn’t entirely successful but its daring theme, performances and two stunning set pieces make it a worthwhile movie.

With “The Wrong Man” Hitch finally got his wish to work with all American icon Henry Fonda. Hitch elected to try the approach used by the Italian Neo-realism movement (best represented by DeSica’s “The Bicycle Thief”) in telling the true story of a musician named Manny who is identified as a robbery and murder suspect. This case of mistaken identity, the opposite of Hitch’s later experiment with “Psycho”, took an unusual tact with a more realistic performance style and less stylized look. It’s a minor Hitchcock classic with a strong performance by Vera Miles as Manny’s wife who ends up having a nervous break down due to what occurs.

All the movies look exceptional. The older movies have some analog inherent analog flaws due to the age of the films but, on the whole, have never looked better. “Strangers on a Train” has been digitally remastered for this edition and features a sharper image with less grain problems. The blacks, grays and whites are solid and less murky looking than on the previous edition. “Dial M for Murder” suffers from haloing due to the 3-D process used to shoot the movie but the colors are vibrant and rich. “North by Northwest” looks terrific. It was previously released on DVD and this is the same transfer using a cleaned up restored version of the film. The restored mono sound on “Dial M” and the many other films included here sounds crisp with good presence.

Making up for some of their oversights in the past, Warner has spent a lot of money to spiff up these classic movies. Every single movie has a short documentary on the making of the film featuring directors Richard Franklin (”Psycho 2″, “Roadgames”, “Flatland”) and Peter Bogdanovich (”Paper Moon”, “The Last Picture Show”, “What’s Up Doc?”) commenting on Hitch’s films. Franklin’s a good choice as he’s demonstrated tremendous skill in his overlooked suspense films. Bogdanovich who enjoyed a friendship with Hitch and interviewed the master for his book on Hitchcock has tremendous insight. He also does a killer Hitchcock imitation. Patricia Hitchcock O’Connell a fine character actress who appeared in two of the nine films included here, provides an insider’s perspective on the great director’s work and his overlooked collaborator his wife Alma Reville Hitchcock. There’s also a generous amount of behind-the-scenes photos included in many of the documentaries and clips from various films included in the set.

Both “North by Northwest” and “Strangers on a Train” come with commentary tracks. “North by Northwest” features the same commentary track by the late great Ernest Lehman as the previous edition. “Strangers on a Train” combines comments from Bogdanovich, “Psycho” screenwriter Jospeh Stefano and clips from Patricia Highsmith who wrote the novel the film is based on. It’s a pity that more clips of Hitch from Bogdanovich’s interviews and others over the years weren’t assembled to give us a running commentary from the master himself but both Bogdanovich and Stefano give great insight as they knew the man and/or worked with him and also have the distance of collaborators.

A great set from Warner Brothers, “The Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection” should be an essential purchase for any fan of Hitch’s. There’s only one glaring omission from this set and that’s “Lifeboat” which Hitchcock directed for Fox. Unfortunately, Warner wasn’t able to secure the rights to include that for this DVD set. Oh, and I forgot to mention that every single title here is in the plastic Amray cases that Warner has recently begun releasing movies in so they’re more durable than the cardboard sleeves for the previous editions of “North by Northwest” and “Strangers on a Train”. My only complaint is with the box itself; it isn’t all that sturdy and could have more details about the films and the extras. I’d also like to have seen an additional disc featuring maybe Hitchcock’s films he made for the War Office during WWII as an extras here (similar to the episodes of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” that Universal packaged with their boxed sets). Still, one can’t argue with the price as it works out to be roughly $10.00 for each movie. You’d pay nearly double that to buy them separately.

How can a film lover resist buying this amazing collection. Alfred Hitchcock now has another marvelous collection featuring some of his great and less-well-known films:

I only discovered this movie about four years ago but have watched it every Christmas since. To me it’s the best version of the Christmas Carol ever made, and now it gets the best treatment you could have ever hoped for. This two disc collector’s edition contains two different versions of this movie. First is the colorized version, but then the second is the valid treat. They went succor to the recent prints of this and worked from there. After carefully removing the skips, scratches, and jerky frames, they digitally restored the movie to a version that looks as if it were made yesterday! The sound has been changed to 5.1 digital surround, and there’s even a widescreen version for 16:9 televisions.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Christmas Carol! Click HereThe special features include an earlier version of Christmas Carol (not as sterling as this one), as well as several featurettes on the movie, interviews with the stars, a feature on Alistair Sim, and others.

You can voice the distributor effect a lot of misfortune into this restoration and it shows. I wish they’d do the same for other grand films like “It’s a Fantastic Life” and “The Bishop’s Wife”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Christmas Carol! Click HereHighly recommended as the best version of this classic you’ll rep anywhere.

Although this 1951 classic film takes some liberties with the Dicken’s new, it remains the film most faithful to the modern yarn. Some of the sets and costumes were directly inspired by the memorable illustrations in the first edition of the book. Alastair Sim is very convincing as the miserly Scrooge who, after a grisly night of ghostly visits, is transformed into a man who knows how to sustain Christmas in his heart.

There have been many DVD editions of this holiday popular in new years, several of them from VCI Entertainment. In this package, VCI has included some things featured on previous releases (commentary, Dickens biography, etc.), but the valid star of this site is the beautifully restored version of the gloomy and white film. According to a short feature on the restoration of the film, VCI has finally been able to bag film elements from the new master. Apparently they didn’t have access to a complete master, so they archaic several of the best prints they could earn and digitally read them to choose which frames were the best available. The rest was cleaned up by hand. It sounds like a labor of care for, and the result is visible on the mask. The restored print is available in 4×3 and 16×9 in 1:37:1 format. (According to the Amazon product description page, the aspect ratio is given as 1:87 and elsewhere as 1:33, the DVD box says 1:37.) There are a few seconds of less than pristine audio, but overall this is a handsome anguish.

A nice touch I’ve never seen on a DVD before is an optional audio track for the blind, in which a narrator describes the action on the shroud pausing for dialog from the actors. A wandering commentary track with Marcus Heard and George Cole (young Scrooge) is included. Great of the commentary is reprised in a feature interview by Heard in which Cole reminisces about Alastair Sim, “Spirit of Christmas Past.” The audio is in English only. Subtitles are in English or Spanish.

The second disc offers the unique 1935 Seymour Hicks’ film version of the chronicle. A colorized version of the 1951 film is also included on Disc 2; the brief introduction by Patrick McNee (young Marley) has been seen before on previous releases of the colorized version. There are also theatrical trailers from the UK release (”Scrooge”) and the US release (”A Christmas Carol”) .

VCI has given us a heavenly package here. They’ve done a sizable job with the restoration of a film esteem. Many viewers will never have seen such a fine print of this holiday current before. The bonus features are a nice inclusion, but the restoration is the precise reason to salvage this edition. Highly recommended!

I strongly recommend! Originally released in 1960, the film returned to theatres 4 times in later years. This is absolutely one of the most fun family films the Walt Disney Studios ever made. There is truly something for everyone… comedy, action, adventure, drama, romance, and suspense. Even at 126 minutes in length, it does not feel too long. Starting in the aftermath of a shipwreck, the Swiss family rebuilds their life on an uncharted tropical island. They use the wealth of salvage in livestock, tools, guns, furniture, wood, and more to build a safe home in the trees, complete with running water and other conveniences. The mother and father begin an idealic exhistance with their 3 boys aged 9, 16, and 18. But one day the older boys decide to take a canoe and survey the rest of the island. They stumble across pirates that are attacking the crew of a ship, and rescue the captain’s daughter, bringing the wrath of the pirates on them since they are discovered.

Directed by Ken Annakin, the movie was filmed on location on the caribbean island of Tobago. While the production went way over budget for a total cost of $4 million, Walt did not get upset with his production team at the time since the film was looking to be success when he reviewed clips from the set. As it turned out, with subsequent theatre releases, television, and video airing, the film has turned out to be one of the top-grossing films from Disney.

The tropical scenery is spectacular as they filmed all over the island; waterfalls, forests, grass plains, flowers, beaches, cliffs, mountains, oceans, streams, and much more. Contributing a tremendous amount to the exotic locale of the movie are animals, pirates, ships, and a tree house to beat all tree houses ever made. Similar to the role the submarine “Nautilus” filled in the earlier film “20,000 Leagues Below the Sea”, the tree house becomes a star in it’s own right. The wonderful and inventive home designed by the castaways and from the ships salvage is incredible to behold.

Featuring a wonderful cast and crew assembled by Walt himself, Mr. Disney liked to stick with actors he knew could relate to a broad audience. Most of the actors in this film appeared in other Disney movies over the years, many times with other actors from this film. Hayley Mills (Pollyana, Parent Trap, That Darn Cat, Summer Magic, In Search of the Castaways, The Moon-Spinners), Dorothy McGuire (Old Yeller, Summer Magic), John Mills (Did not appear in other Disney movies, but was Hayley’s real life father), James MacArthur (Light in the Forest, Third Man on the Mountain, Kidnapped), Kevin Corcoran (A Tiger Walks, Savage Sam, Old Yeller, The Shaggy Dog, Bon Voyage, Babes in Toyland, Toby Tyler, Pollyanna), Tommy Kirk (Probably the most proficient of all with Savage Sam, Old Yeller, The Shaggy Dog, Moon Pilot, Bon Voayage, Son of Flubber, The Absent-Minded Professor, Misadventure of Merlin Jones, The Monkeys Uncle, Babes in Toyland), and Janet Munroe (Darby O’Gill and the Little People, Third Man on the Mountain). Most of these actors also appeared in movies for the Disney television series as well.

VAULT DISNEY DVD VERSION

The 2 disc DVD treatment that Disney gave this film is perfect, starting with great packaging and case. It is in Widescreen, the first widescreen release outside of theatres for the film in fact. And what a difference it makes in the beautiful location island vistas of the film. The film has been cleaned up and remastered to its original brilliance with lush colors, great image and depth, it just sparkles. The DVD transfer itself is very well done, a high quality job. The audio is very clean and crisp.

DVD EXTRAS

The extras on this DVD are what really make the best version released of this film, and they are not all listed here at Amazon or even on the packaging. You have to hunt them down and get creative with your remote. So let me help by telling you what to look for if you buy this… For starters they have the original cartoon that was released with the movie, “Sea Salts” allowing you to see this with the kids the way that it is meant to be seen. There is a 2 minute “1960 Disney Studio Album”, a montage of projects, attractions, shows, and films being made and released that year. There is an audio commentary as an alternate track that features comments from cast and crew.

Next we have 23 minutes from a vintage Walt Disney television “Wonderful World of Disney” episode titled “Escape to Paradise”, that show the making of the film behind the scenes. Up next is the original 1960 movie theatre trailers for the film, and the 1960 televison spots to advertise the film. Then there are “Storyboard to Scene Comparisons”; a seperate “Storyboard Gallery”; and a 2 minute “Production Gallery” of photo stills from behind the scenes at location. Another gallery is full of production stills; Next is “Biographies” on 8 principle actors; and then “Concept Art” on the films pre-production design work.

As if that’s not enough a featurette titled “Adventure in the Making” was made just for this set, and at 49:00 minutes long it is very complete and satisfying, with recent interviews of the original cast and crew. There is great behind the scenes original footage in this piece, and the folks regale us with funny stories of the filming days. Peter Elleshaw (matte artist), Ken Annakin (director), Danny Lee (special effects), and actors John Mills, Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran are all here for modern interviews. ANOTHER short 4 minute featurette that was also made just for this set is “Swiss Family Treehouse”, narrated by Hayley Mills. It is the pre-opening footage and the actual Opening Ceremony of the “Swiss Family Robinson’s Tree House” attraction (now gone, replaced with Tarzans Tree House) at the Disneyland Park. Walt himself is there and it is evident he is really enjoying himself in this must-see footage.

Included on the set is a very nice 12 minute interview with James MacArthur, who appeared in this film and 3 others for Disney along with a TV movie. This features great video as well. There is a “Pirates” music video sing along featuring pirate themed clips from Disney films, TV shows, cartoons, and the theme park attraction “Pirates of the Caribbean”, all set to the Disney tune of “Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirates Life For Me”. An unusual or unexpected extra is a featurette that has 20 minutes of excerpts from a 1940 non-Disney version of the story.

The dvd set has Audio Archives set to photos from the film, including 2 Interactive Sound Studios, 2 songs from the film, original 1960 radio spots. Another real treat is the complete LP soundtrack of the original “Storybook Album” of the movie released in 1960.

SUMMARY

I really enjoyed this DVD, and this film really got the best of treatment by Disney. They simply outdid themselves and I am one grateful viewer. I wish all the really good classic Disney films got at least some of this royal treatment. They have a reputation as the best studio about protecting their old source material, archives, etc, but they are not always generous in using it for their DVD’s so I can really appreciate the effort here by the decision makers. Thank you Disney for this compilation that really honors this gem of a film the way it should be!!!! My highest recommendation if you are considering buying this DVD.

The folks at Walt Disney Home Video have put together four excellent new “Vault Disney” releases that truly showcase DVD technology at its best. “Swiss Family Robinson,” one of Walt Disney’s best-loved live-action adventures, benefits immensely from DVD technology, especially the wide-screen presentation and THX restored picture and sound quality. The widescreen alone would have satisfied most fans, so the plethora of extras on the supplemental disc are truly special. I have never seen a DVD with so many extras presented in such a creative and easily accessible way. Thank you to everyone at Walt Disney Home Video for this wonderful DVD. Hopefully, more titles will follow in this series (like Third Man on the Mountain, Darby O’Gill and the Little People, The Moonspinners, and Summer Magic) and ALL Disney DVD’s will be released in their original theatrical ratios

At the outset, let me say what I am: I am white, 61 years old, a physician, and I live in a gated community. It would be easy for people like me to dismiss “Head of State” as just another crass commercial rip-off by Hollywood. It’s not that at all.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Head of State! Click Here

The premise underlying “Head of State” is that Americans are currently represented by a government totally out of touch with the lives of ordinary citizens. That’s why this film can be so hilarious, why it strikes such a responsive chord.

“Head of State” is more than just another comedy, more than just a parody of our political process. It is brilliant political satire, studded with remarkable insights into the political process. Yes, I laughed all the way through the film. But if Mays Gilliam ever comes to real life in America, I won’t be laughing at him. I’ll be voting for him. And so will the country.

Chris Rock does an excellent job writing directing and co-producing Head of State. It’s a hilarious comedy with a lot of heart and a lot of soul. Well-written, intelligent and extremely clever, Rock’s comedy stays true to its African-American roots while making commentary about the sad state of the current political process in America. Perhaps in his own way Rock is trying to send a message to politicians to express real ideas, speak from the heart.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Head of State! Click Here

In Head Of State Chris Rock plays a struggling Washington D.C. Alderman who gets no respect. Constituents don’t appreciate the aspiring politician, and his girlfriend (Robin Givens) dumps him leaving him with unpaid bills and a repossessed car. The next day his boss (Keith David) fires him. He thinks things are turning around when the Democratic Party recruits him to run for President. The jokes on him; the Democratic party knows it can’t win against the popular two-term Republican vice president in 2004, so they decide to trot out Rock’s character as a filler candidate until the 2008 election. They don’t believe a black candidate has a chance, but the alderman believes in himself.

The campaign is dull until a pep talk from his brother (Bernie Mac) at a Chicago campaign stop. Soon Chris changes campaign tactics and decides to be real. The more he’s true to his Black self the more his poll numbers start to go up. This is when the movie really takes off. When Rock’s Alderman starts saying what he feels instead of what he’s rehearsed, the campaign starts to come to life. All of a sudden this underdog has a chance. All of a suddent the woman who dumped him wants him back, but the candidate has his eyes on a hardworking gas station worker (Tamala Jones)

As the alderman’s polls numbers start to go up, the incumbent candidate starts to worry about the underdog, Rock’s campaign manager’s worry about controlling him. But he still believes in himself. He hits a snag after a school shooting, but with the help of his brother decides to challenge the incumbent to a debate. Things come to a head when the two candidates debate. Rock’s character is full of energy and new ideas, and he eventually goes on to embarrass the uninspired jargon-spouting incumbent. In the end he wins the presidency becoming the head of State, and gets the girl who works at the gas station.

I really enjoyed this movie; I feel guilty about missing this one in theatres because this movie made me laugh and smile so much in two hours. I got give Chris Rock props for creating a film with a positive message and writing black characters in this movie that are intelligent and hardworking. In this “Gangsta” era it’s rare to see a movie focusing on regular working class black folks. More props to Chris for making a movie with quality production values. A lot of black filmmakers don’t take time to focus on crucial details like cinematography, casting and editing. Paying attention to those often ignored film elements transforms Head of State from a good screenplay into a great movie.

Besides Rock’s hilarious and intelligent portrayal of the presidential candidate underdog, there are some great performances here from the supporting cast. Rock writes well-developed characters for all his cast, not just himself. Bernie Mac steals the few scenes he’s in and has great chemistry with Rock; they feel like brothers. Robin Givens is hilarious as the gold-digging ex in her pitiful attempts to win back her man. Givens has the best performance of her career; I never thought she could be so funny. Lynn Whitfield literally disappears from the screen and becomes the campaign manger. She must have channeled Condelezza Rice for this performance. This woman is extremely underrated; she needs to be the lead in more films! (Cough*Halle Berry’s upcoming Nefertiri* Cough) Tamala Jones is sweet as the love interest.

Head of State is a Shawn James five star essential video. Pick this one up along with Eddie Murphy’s The Distinguished Gentleman, CB4, and The Great White Hype for your black cinema night. While you’re at it, pick up Diary of A Mad Black Woman and How U Like Me Now.

Of the three Pasolini DVD’s recently released by Waterbearer, Oedipus Rex is probably the best not only in its transfer, but in the film itself. That being said, the transfer is smooth far from expansive. The matting is off, although nowhere approach as badly as it is on Porcile. The colors are mature and the film is pitted and scratched, but again, nowhere as badly as on the Porcile disc. My main complaint is (as it was with Adore Meetings) that the burned-in (not optional) subtitles are white, and are impossible to read in many parts of the washed-out transfer. That being said, this is one of Pasolini’s strongest films, and is definitely worth watching, whether you’re a cinephile, a Pasolini fan, or a classical scholar. Casual viewers may be build off by Pasolini’s style which, admittedly, is an acquired taste, but more open-minded viewers will be greatly rewarded. Again, it’s doubtful that these films will behold better editions any time soon, so if you’re enthusiastic, there’s no reason to wait around.

Oedipus Rex (1967) is Pasolini’s opulent and riveting adaptation of the weak account of Oedipus, a man who unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother; simultaneously, it is a attractive reflection of the filmmaker himself. Although Sophocles’ 2,500-year-old play forms the basis for the film’s second half, Pasolini’s prologue is startlingly autobiographical. He opens in early 20th century Fascist Italy, while using the myth’s characters to recreate his parents’ relationship and his hold birth. He then takes us to a mythic weak world, filmed primarily in Morocco, with astronomical desert landscapes and exquisite native architecture (Thebes is a massive city made of adobe, which feels genuinely faded and dependable) . Pasolini brings a grandeur and anecdote sweep to his Oedipus Rex, despite its microscopic budget, even as he gives plump weight to the intimate moments.Buy,Download, Or Stream Oedipus Rex! Click HereThe film draws stout power comes from the completely naturalistic performances, ranging from the leads to the minor characters (Pasolini plays a High Priest) . Silvana Mangano (Mrs. Dino De Laurentiis) is outstanding as Jocasta, Oedipus’s enigmatic mother/wife. Her stone-like face suggests intense erotic heat with the cramped wrinkling of a lip. My major reservation with the film is Franco Citti as Oedipus. He appeared in seven films for Pasolini (including the title role in Accatone), and was usually exceptional, but here he brings a too-consistent harsh tone to his role. Of course, Citti’s monolithic determine, as both Oedipus the boy (who cheats to catch a discus match) and king, may be Pasolini’s point. Namely, since Oedipus refuses to grow, to advance to an integrated thought of who he is and what his society needs him to be, he destroys himself by willful blindness.Visually, Oedipus Rex draws colossal force from its intelligent palette and expend of the harsh Moroccan sunlight, not to mention its breathtaking, sometimes infamous sense of style. Yet the literal clarity of the film does not obscure its dreamlike qualities. Pasolini wanted to film the sage as something which takes site in an authentic setting, yet which unfolds in a period outside of historical time. Even the eclectically multicultural soundtrack, with folk music from traditions as startlingly diverse as Japan and Rumania (and this was twenty years before the popularity of “world music”), helps conclude Pasolini’s ambitious goal.Intriguingly, the proper protagonist of the film is Pasolini himself, who subtextually takes on Freud’s (in) notorious Oedipus Complex. As he said, “I wanted to beget … a kind of completely metaphoric - and therefore mythicized - autobiography; and … to confront both the problems of psycho-analysis and the pickle of the epic.” (In the half hour documentary on Pasolini included on the DVD, one illuminating part is devoted to his views on Oedipus Rex.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Oedipus Rex! Click Here

Revisionist Freudianism aside, this film succeeds in bringing both Oedipus and his world astonishingly to life. This Oedipus Rex is animated because it works simultaneously on so many different levels. For people original to Pasolini, this representative film is an qualified dwelling to start. In terms of its impact on film history, you can gape its influence on pictures as diverse as Fellini Satyricon (1969), Norman Jewison’s Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), and Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) . It shows Pasolini grappling with some of the knottiest themes of his films, and of most people’s lives, namely the relationship of men and women, of child and parents, and of one man to himself. And it is at once a work of corrupt create and deep feeling, a semi-camp tale with valid mythic resonance.

The DVD is of very ample quality, especially considering the film’s age. However, the Pasolini Foundation in Rome, which controls the rights, insisted that the U.S. distributor release the DVD without any chapters (i.e., it’s in one continuous track), to back people to glance the film in its entirety. Quiet, it’s critical to have this crucial allotment of Pasolini’s filmography on DVD.

Cannonball Run is a guilty pleasure. No one would ever say it’s a good movie, but it’s a like train wreck, you find yourself staring. Burt Reynolds tries to live his glory days of Smokey and The Bandit, bringing along the same Director, Hal Needham as well as a slew of falling stars to prop him up. Its as if all of them knew their careers were sliding and it was one last ditch effort to make a great noise. Don’t get me wrong, many of these people are talented. Lets explain the premise first. The ‘Run’ is an auto street (or highway) race, based closely on a real race that was run throughout the 70s that went from New York to California. It was highly illegal, and probably a lot a fun. There is even an appearance by one of the original drivers, Brock Yates, who is now an editor for Car & Driver Magazine and makes an amusing appearance as the MC, explaining how the race goes. Reynolds is JJ McClure, a former race car driver and mechanic who is the standing champ in the race. Eager to keep his title, he is desperate to win again. In this race though, that doesn’t just mean going fast, anyone can go fast, but sooner or later, you will get stopped. JJ and his strange friend, Victor (Dom Delouse) adopt a personality of two paramedics driving a patient cross country. Apparently this worked in the actual race one year. The supporting cast of competition includes Jamie Farr as an overzealous Sheik in a hopped up Rolls Royce, Roger Moore playing a comic version of his James Bond character driving his popular silver Austin Martin, Mel Tillus and Terry Bradshaw playing a couple of southern boys cruising in a stolen race car and my personal favorite, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. playing womanizing, gambling hard drinking priests driving a red Ferrari (they aren’t really priests). All this adds up to a movie where every scene you see a star. Dean and Sammy steal the show in almost every scene they’re in, they are class acts adding something unattainable in most pictures of this caliber. The racing antics are not quite as funny as the beginning scenes where all the characters are introduced, but it is entertaining. The best part of the movie comes at the end though where the bloopers are shown during the closing credits. It’s worth the price of the DVD alone. Don’t expect a great movie out of Cannonball Run, all you can really expect is a good time, but isn’t that what it’s all about?

A zany cross country race based on an
actual event called “The Cannonball
Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash.” The brainchild of writer Brock
Yates, who competed in the first Cannonball in 1971. The object is to
drive as fast and as safely as possible from Connecticut to Redondo Beach, California.
In every Cannonball, no driver or person has ever been injured.
The worst case, a team or two put behind
bars for no more than an hour.
“The Cannonball Run” is based on real
characters and adventures. It was penned
by Yates, who makes an appearance in the early stages of the movie as the “organizer.”

Burt Reynolds headlines an all star lineup as “J.J. McClure” a wealthy
entrepreneur who, along with his
‘executive assistant’ Victor Prinze,
played with great verve by comedian
Dom DeLuise. Victor has some issues.
In times of ‘mortal danger’ his personality changes from mild mannered
mechanic, into an alter-ego called
“Captain Chaos” who wreaks havoc on
some less than respectable hombres we encounter along the way.
Farrah Fawcett is teamed with J.J. and Victor when she’s kidnapped in their ambulance.
Jack Elam as “Doctor Nikolas Van Helsing” provides lots of laughs
and few chills when needed.

Veteran performers Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. join the ensemble as
a pair of priests in a souped-up Ferrari.

Roger Moore makes a departure from his
‘James Bond’ character playing “Seymor Goldfarb.” An individual who believes he’s
Roger Moore. It’s a great spoof and Moore plays it with perfection.

Mel Tillis and former quarterback
Terry Bradshaw show up as just a
couple of good ol’ boys ala “Dukes
of Hazzard” style, toting cases of beer but sans the “General Lee.”

Tara Buckman and Adrienne Barbeau are seen throughout the film in their
custom black Lamborghini Countach,
breaking speed limits and the hearts
of some unsuspecting law enforcement
officers along the route.

Jamie Farr from “MASH” is cast in the role of a Sheik obsessed with winning the Cannonball
in a hot-rod Rolls Royce.

The Cannonball Run was directed by
Hal Needham who brought us “Smokey and
the Bandit” and “Hooper.” Hal and Brock
were partners in a Cannonball held in the late 70S. Needham sets a flat out,
pedal to the metal pace for “Cannonball” and it doesn’t let
up till the finish line.

After twenty years, this film still makes you laugh. Rent it tonight :)
